“There’s really no secret about our approach. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors, doing new things. We’re always exploring and experimenting. We call it Imagineering.” —Walt Disney.
WordPress 6.0 was released on May 24th. This update includes several advancements to make your WordPress content-creating and site-building experience more feature-rich and intuitive—which expedites workflow, increases productivity, and empowers builders like never before.
We are indeed entering a new frontier with modern WordPress.
In alignment with WP Engine’s core value of “Committed to Give Back,” we formed a Developer Relations team to engage with the community, speak with customers, and help folks transition to the block editor/full site editing.
As part of that mission, we’ve given a lot of thought and set out to define what a “developer” actually is. Over the years, we believed a developer worked exclusively with code—a programmer if you will.
While there’s (some) truth in that statement, we’re starting to see a much bigger picture and challenge whether that’s entirely true. So we think a more appropriate word in this context might be: builder.
Merriam-Webster defines a builder as “one that builds” and builds as “develops according to a systematic plan, by a definite process, or on a particular base.”
Builders are responsible for the entire construction process: Designers use pixels, developers use code, and creators use words, audio, and video. Each contributes uniquely and are subsets of people we wish to serve.
We have three core values that form the bedrock of our Builders initiative:
- Generosity – Who can we help, and how can we help them?
- Innovation – What is our expertise, and how can we leverage it to further technology?
- Curiosity – Is there a better way/different approach, and what’s preventing us from trying it?
The Disney Story
On July 17th, 1955, more than 28,000 people attended an event in Anaheim, California, hosted by American entrepreneur and pioneer of the animation industry, Walter Elias Disney. It was opening day at Disneyland.
Walt’s vision reached epic proportions as he sought to transform the theme park industry by providing a place where children and their parents could have fun. He succeeded and is considered a cultural icon.
Walt wanted what he did to transcend who he was. While Disneyland is the only theme park completed under his direct supervision, his ideas continue to power the development of theme parks worldwide.
Much of the Disney magic results from interdisciplinary work and a process called Imagineering. According to Walt, Imagineering is the implementation of creative ideas in practical form and also thrives on collaboration.
Welcome to Builders
Heather Brunner, CEO of WP Engine, often says, “It takes a village.”
The Builders site is our village, an interactive and immersive WordPress community that values innovation and curiosity—where we encourage generosity, celebrate ideas, and form new pathways.
It’s a destination for discovery and a comprehensive resource for designers, developers, and creators who wish to be inspired and learn how to leverage the power of building with WordPress and for WordPress.
Together, we are leading technology. And by we, we mean we, the people.
