{"id":113159,"date":"2020-12-23T11:27:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-23T17:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/?p=113159"},"modified":"2025-05-14T13:32:49","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T18:32:49","slug":"wp-engine-2020-in-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-engine-2020-in-review\/","title":{"rendered":"WP Engine: 2020 in Review"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This year, we\u2019re extra thankful for all you\u2019ve done to make us who we are!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout 2020, we\u2019ve been inspired by your ability to adapt and your unswerving commitment to digital innovation, and we\u2019ve been proud to serve as your digital engine as you\u2019ve tapped into creative solutions that unlock the power and versatility of WordPress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We enter a new year focused on helping you push your digital breakthroughs even further, and we hope you\u2019ll draw inspiration from some of the ways you and your fellow customers rose to the challenges of a digital-first world in 2020, as well as the ways we improved our platform and grew as a company, all in support of your hard work and perseverance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/WPE-Banners-EOTY2020-PressAhead_v04-1.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-113210\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>2020 drove home a simple but powerful point for businesses of all shapes and sizes: <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/press-ahead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">your website is your new front door<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/blog\/how-covid-19-is-changing-our-internet-habits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">surge in online activity<\/a> and higher-than-ever demand for <a href=\"https:\/\/velocitize.com\/2020\/11\/19\/the-future-of-shopping-is-live\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital-first <em>everything<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>you built nearly 150,000 new websites on <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our platform<\/a> this year, joining the now 1.2 million digital experiences powered by WP Engine, all optimized for that \u201cfront door\u201d experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>40% of those new sites were built by the more than 30,000 new customers we welcomed in 2020, taking our number of global customers to more than 150,000 and adding to the number of overall sites that benefit from WP Engine\u2019s industry-leading performance, security, and award-winning support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the sheer number of you that pressed ahead in 2020, it\u2019s also worth noting how you did it, and some of the tools and features you used along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 15,000 sites began using <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/smart-plugin-manager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Smart Plugin Manager<\/a> in 2020, which safely and automatically made more than 1M plugin updates throughout the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also blocked more than 109M attacks daily for you using technologies like <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/global-edge-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Edge Security<\/a>, and nearly 900,000 sites around the world used <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/local\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Local<\/a>\u2014now available for<a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/blog\/better-together-wp-engine-and-flywheel-make-local-and-genesis-products-available-to-all-customers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> all WP Engine sites<\/a>\u2014for <a href=\"https:\/\/getflywheel.com\/layout\/local-wordpress-development-environment-how-to\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">development projects<\/a> this year, driving home its well-earned reputation as the most popular <a href=\"https:\/\/torquemag.io\/2020\/05\/how-to-use-local-by-flywheel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local development tool<\/a> for WordPress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across all of the creators, builders, and entrepreneurs who power their business with WordPress, you partnered with us to build amazing digital experiences when the world needed them most. Here\u2019s a look at just a few:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/powering-shaq-gronk-virtual-party-with-a-purpose\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Entertainment company Medium Rare<\/a> used our platform for one of the largest virtual parties of the year (featuring two of the biggest names in sports, Shaquille O&#8217;Neal and Rob Gronkowski), which reached millions of viewers around the world and raised money for charity.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/uswnt-players-association-scores-incredible-site-with-time-left-on-the-clock\/\" target=\"_blank\">Digital agency Springbox<\/a> spun up a site for the OOSA brand of the U.S. Women\u2019s National Team Players Association with pages that load in milliseconds, and a nearly 10% better bounce rate than benchmark against other sports websites in the United States. A world-class digital experience to go alongside world-class players.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/becoming-the-best-digital-grocer-in-town\/\" target=\"_blank\">Metcash<\/a>, Australia\u2019s largest wholesale food distributor, worked with our team to build a <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/headless-wordpress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">headless WordPress<\/a> site integrated with WooCommerce in order to support online sales and schedule contactless deliveries. They built the platform almost overnight, providing at-risk populations with safe access to food in the early days of the pandemic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/WPE-Banners-EOTY2020-Platform_v02.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-113211\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter what your digital project is, powering it on the best platform for WordPress is our number priority, and that starts with providing industry-leading performance and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re proud to report that WP Engine hosts the <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/resources\/building-on-the-fastest-digital-experience-platform-for-wordpress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fastest platform on desktop and mobile<\/a> for WordPress. We also host the highest percentage of sites that load in less than 200ms (pulled from the <a href=\"https:\/\/httparchive.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HTTP Archive<\/a>), which means your visitors are able to get to your site content faster than competitors on other platforms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the security side of things, we completed a <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/blog\/wp-engine-successfully-completes-soc-2-type-ii-examination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SOC 2 Type II examination<\/a> this year for our customer environment and User Portal, ensuring your business and your brand are protected and meet the highest, independent standards of security, availability, and privacy of customer data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We upgraded more than 264,000 customer sites to <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/blog\/php-7-4-now-available-to-wp-engine-customers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PHP 7.4<\/a> (which offers both speed and security benefits), as well as made the latest Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol available to all customers for free, which improved performance and protected you against unwanted DDoS attacks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also made powerful cloud infrastructure from <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/google-cloud-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/amazon-web-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AWS<\/a> more widely available to you, we enabled <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/global-edge-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Edge Security<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudflare.com\/products\/argo-smart-routing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Argo Smart Routing<\/a> for better application performance, and we added a slew of new features to <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/blog\/smart-plugin-manager-does-it-again-new-features-improve-productivity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Smart Plugin Manager<\/a> to make it even more effective and easier to use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This too was a theme with our major <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/genesis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genesis<\/a> releases in 2020: <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/genesis-blocks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genesis Blocks<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/genesis-custom-blocks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genesis Custom Blocks<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/genesis\/\">Genesis Pro<\/a>, all of which centered around new ways to bring additional <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/resources\/webinar-custom-blocks-made-easy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">block editor-focused<\/a> tools to site creators and developers, and enable them with a greater mastery of modern WordPress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, to make sure you\u2019re able to utilize all of our tools and features seamlessly, we made multiple rounds of <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/blog\/introducing-your-new-and-improved-wp-engine-user-portal\/?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improvements to our User Portal<\/a>, including enabling <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/support\/sso-user-portal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Single Sign-On <\/a>from WP Engine into WordPress, all with a focus on giving you more flexibility and control while providing you with an effortless user experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/WPE-Banners-EOTY2020-CoreValues_v04.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-113221\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When our core values were first enshrined in 2013, we were a three-year-old company with 40 employees. Today, we\u2019re a global organization with customers in 50 countries and nearly 1,000 employees across the U.S., Europe, and Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year also marked WP Engine&#8217;s 10th anniversary. In honor of this significant milestone, we refreshed our <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/blog\/honoring-our-past-with-an-eye-towards-the-future-wp-engines-core-values\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Core Values<\/a> to reflect the company we have grown into, inclusive of our friends from StudioPress, Local, and Flywheel. This new set of shared values will inform our sense of direction, and solidify our guiding principles as we head into the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our refreshed Core Values are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do the Right Thing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Customer Inspired<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Design Matters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Committed to Give Back&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Built for Growth&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While Committed to Give Back was one of our original values, and one our employees have taken to heart year after year, 2020 saw a huge uptick when it came to employee-led giving, and we\u2019re exceedingly proud of the way all of our employees leaned in during a challenging year to give back to those in need.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout 2020, employees and WP Engine have donated more than $265,000 globally through our corporate social responsibility program, <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/engine-for-good\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Engine for Good,<\/a> to more than 20 organizations, including Black Girls Code, Doctors Without Borders\/M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res (MSF), Central Texas Food Bank, and Rize Up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of it would have been possible without you and the trust you put in us every day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you to all of our customers, partners, and employees, who provided their inspiration and ingenuity during a challenging year.
