{"id":152306,"date":"2024-07-15T17:36:12","date_gmt":"2024-07-15T22:36:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/?p=152306"},"modified":"2025-05-14T13:33:28","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T18:33:28","slug":"summer-hackathon-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/summer-hackathon-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Doing More With Less: WP Engine\u2019s Summer Hackathon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At WP Engine, our Hackathons are two-day innovation sprints in which teams collaborate to craft new product ideas, solve existing problems, or simply flex their creative muscles by trying to build something new.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s hackathon, which asked participants to channel their inner scrappiness and do more with less, was aptly dubbed <em>Scrap-a-thon<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants were encouraged to choose any project related to their day-to-day work or a new area of interest, including physical builds, code cleanups, accessibility efforts, and more. This provided an excellent opportunity for employees to work with their peers, foster new connections, and learn from those with whom they may not regularly interact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In alignment with the event\u2019s scrappy theme, each team was given a lean budget of $50 and was encouraged to tap into existing resources to \u201cscrap\u201d their projects together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on for an overview of the projects, awards, and charitable contributions that came out of this year\u2019s WP Engine Scrap-a-thon!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scrapathon 2024 awards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the spirit of cordial competition and can-do scrappiness, WP Engine\u2019s hackathon events always include an optional contest, although participants who wish to focus solely on their builds can also do so.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be considered for an award, participants must meet two criteria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Participants must present their project idea virtually during a predetermined project presentation event<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participating teams must consist of at least two people<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Award winners are given $250 to donate to a charity of their choice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, there were five awards in total, all of which could be voted on by Hackathon participants and WP Engine employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Finest Craftsmanship: <\/strong>This award goes to the team that spent the most time polishing and perfecting their approach to and presentation of their project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Platinum Blueprint: <\/strong>This award goes to the project with the most potential to become an actual WP Engine product update at some point in the future.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scrappy Scraptacular:<\/strong> This award goes to the team with the best and most unique overall idea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Salvage Spirit: <\/strong>This award goes to the most ambitious project, even if it didn\u2019t fully come to fruition during the short hackathon timeframe.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Blueprint Harmony: <\/strong>This award goes to the project that builds the most synergy between disparate pieces, pulling them together into a unified, harmonious workflow.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The winning projects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While the purpose of our hackathons is to collaborate and find ways to build a project quickly and with limited resources, it\u2019s also about striving for one of our coveted awards!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s scrappiest projects were innovative, impactful, and sometimes downright silly \u2014and we wouldn\u2019t have it any other way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"526\" src=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ecom-1024x526.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-152310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ecom-1024x526.png 1024w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ecom-540x277.png 540w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ecom-768x394.png 768w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ecom-1536x788.png 1536w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ecom-2048x1051.png 2048w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ecom-1500x770.png 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Team members shared their vision for what a comprehensive eCommerce store dashboard within the WP Engine Portal could look like<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">eCom Store Dashboard<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For this hackathon project, four team members came together to reimagine an intuitive dashboard that best reflects the informational needs of eCommerce store owners. The goal was to create a place where eCommerce store owners are empowered with important information about their store\u2019s performance upfront, making it easier to manage their store from the WP Engine Portal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The builders behind this project took home the Finest Craftsmanship award for their well-conceptualized, highly polished proposal. They\u2019ve donated their winnings to the <a href=\"https:\/\/clionas.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cliona\u2019s Foundation<\/a>, which helps families experiencing financial hardship after their child has been diagnosed with a serious illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"526\" src=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/clickhouse-clique-1024x526.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-152311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/clickhouse-clique-1024x526.png 1024w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/clickhouse-clique-540x277.png 540w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/clickhouse-clique-768x394.png 768w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/clickhouse-clique-1536x788.png 1536w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/clickhouse-clique-2048x1051.png 2048w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/clickhouse-clique-1500x770.png 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>This example shows how a dashboard could be used to display log data quickly for a customer or employee who needs it<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The ClickHouse Clique<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This team was motivated by the sheer volume of HTTP logs created on WP Engine\u2019s platform every day (upwards of 13 billion log requests!). They wanted to find a way to make that important data more accessible to customers as well as the individuals who need it within our organization. To do so, they set up a test environment and combined the capabilities of <a href=\"https:\/\/clickhouse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ClickHouse<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/grafana.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grafana<\/a> so that ClickHouse compiles the log data and Grafana uses it to create an easy-to-understand visualization of that data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project took home the Platinum Blueprint award for its great future potential and the team chose to donate their earnings to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centraltexasfoodbank.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Central Texas Food Bank<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/IMG_3001.mov\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>This musician was highly treat-motivated, making it easy to convince them to participate<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Animals Playing Music<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For this fun and scrappy Hackathon project, the team used physical hardware as well as software to turn pets into pianists! With just a few simple tools, they were able to create an instrument that senses the pressure of a pet\u2019s paw to play a simple tune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to their whimsical concept, the team was awarded the Scrappy Scraptacular distinction, and they chose to give back to all future animal superstars by donating their winnings to <a href=\"https:\/\/secured.humanesociety.org\/page\/81880\/donate\/1?ea.tracking.id=ad_gg_branded&amp;en_txn10=ad_gg_cpc_120727562_7704793562_634206280267_humane%20society%20of%20the%20us&amp;en_og_source=ad_gg_fndr_81880_hsus&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_term=humane%20society%20of%20the%20us&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwhb60BhClARIsABGGtw_3sdYVKYN8ZHY6JkNGXGkTDH9on2pchV7ChFC7enHzLP1VrRtTSn0aAucqEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Humane Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/498210E7-6632-419F-9477-D31B1692C374-Copy.mov\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>This musician was less inclined to try their musical talents at first, but a laser pointer proved to be a useful tool for encouragement<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/log-analytics-1024x533.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-152314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/log-analytics-1024x533.png 1024w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/log-analytics-540x281.png 540w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/log-analytics-768x400.png 768w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/log-analytics-1536x799.png 1536w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/log-analytics-2048x1066.png 2048w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/log-analytics-1500x781.png 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>These graphs were created automatically using the script written and tested by the Improved Log Analytics team<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Improved Log Analytics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This project showed concepts for improved log analysis, visibility, and accessibility to make better use of customer log data. The two team members created a script that looks through customer access logs to create a .csv file so that, when it\u2019s pulled into a spreadsheet, it automatically creates graphs that display critical information like site-level dynamic hits per hour, account-level backend processing time, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These two scrappy team members took home the Salvage Spirit award for this data-intensive project, and they donated their earnings to <a href=\"https:\/\/flatwater.org\/damthatcancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dam that Cancer<\/a>, which provides support to families after a cancer diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"570\" src=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/evlv-viz-1024x570.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-152315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/evlv-viz-1024x570.png 1024w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/evlv-viz-540x301.png 540w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/evlv-viz-768x427.png 768w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/evlv-viz-1536x855.png 1536w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/evlv-viz-2048x1140.png 2048w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/evlv-viz-1500x835.png 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>By simply clicking two of the plan types in the left column, CX representatives can easily view and compare resource allocation by plan type<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Evlv-Viz<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These scrappy builders wanted to dig into a pain point that was affecting WP Engine\u2019s customer support team. They created a simple solution that displays different configurations for various WP Engine infrastructure components, making it easier for customer support representatives to compare differences in resource allocation across plan types and point WP Engine customers toward a plan that alleviates any downtime or performance issues they may be experiencing due to resource restraints.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project took home the Blueprint Harmony award for the masterful way it was able to make otherwise complex data simple to visualize. The team chose to donate their earnings to <a href=\"https:\/\/fundtexaschoice.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fund Texas Choice<\/a>, which is an organization that connects pregnant women to reproductive resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Join a seriously scrappy team!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At WP Engine, our commitment to excellence extends beyond the service we provide to customers.
