If you\u2019re looking to save space, have an image-heavy website such as a real estate or photography site, or simply aren\u2019t using all of the different image sizes that are being created, you may be adding extra bulk to your site for no reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Stop WordPress From Generating Different Sized Image Copies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you understand why WordPress generates multiple image sizes, and why it makes sense to prevent it from doing so, it\u2019s time to get to work. Let\u2019s take a look at how to stop WordPress from generating different image sizes in six simple steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Connect Your Site to an FTP Client (To Determine How Many Images Copies Are Being Made)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step is to figure out how many copies WordPress is generating when you upload an image. You can do this by connecting to your site via <a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/resources\/how-to-access-wordpress-files-using-sftp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a FileTransfer Protocol (FTP) client<\/a> or your cPanel\u2019s file manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we mentioned earlier, WordPress generates three copies by default. However, your theme may also create its own set of image sizes for sliders, etc. So it\u2019s important to know exactly what copies are being generated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Upload an Image to Your Site<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, upload an image to your site from your WordPress dashboard admin area and open the media library (<em>Media &gt; Add New<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Click on <em>Select Files<\/em>, and then choose the image file to upload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Navigate to Your Site\u2019s Upload Directory<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Within your File Manager or FTP client, navigate to your site\u2019s \u2018upload\u2019 directory. This will be located within the <em>wp-contents<\/em> folder. There, you\u2019ll find all the copies of your existing images, which are organized by date:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the least, you should find the three image sizes generated by WordPress. If there are more than three, they are likely the copies created by your WordPress theme (in our example above, there are five copies in total).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4: Set Image Sizes to Zero<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, navigate to <em>Settings &gt; Media<\/em> in your WordPress admin dashboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There, you\u2019ll find the default image settings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Change each of the values for the image sizes to 0 (assuming that they are all ones you won\u2019t be using). Select the <em>Save Changes<\/em> button at the bottom of the page when you\u2019re done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 5: Open the functions.php File of Your WordPress Theme<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve now stopped WordPress from generating multiple copies of the existing images you upload. However, you may also need to stop your theme from doing the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do that, navigate to <a href=\"https:\/\/codex.wordpress.org\/Functions_File_Explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the <em>functions.php<\/em> file<\/a> for your WordPress theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll find this in the <em>\/wp-contents\/themes\/ <\/em>folder of your website\u2019s directory.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 6: Delete the Default Image Size Code&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;re in the <em>functions.php <\/em>file, look for any lines of code that are similar to this one:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>add_image_size( &#8216;homepage-thumb&#8217;, 200, 160, true );<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the theme you\u2019re using, there may be multiple versions of this line. You\u2019ll also want to look for any that say \u201cset_thumbnail_post_size\u201d. Remove these lines, and then save your changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Stop WordPress From Compressing Images<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with preventing WordPress and your theme from generating multiple images sizes, you can also prevent them from compressing images. While compression is meant to enhance performance without reducing quality, this isn\u2019t always the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that in mind, here\u2019s how to stop WordPress from compressing and cropping images in three simple steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Open the functions.php File<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to disable WordPress image compression, the first step is to locate and open your theme\u2019s <em>functions.php<\/em> file. The ultimate goal is a site that loads faster; a speedy website improves SEO and attracts visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to optimize images for WordPress is to make adjustments <em>before <\/em>uploading. This process generally occurs in the <em>Save <\/em>or <em>Export <\/em>settings of your image editor (such as Adobe Photoshop or GIMP). Here\u2019s a step-by-step checklist to follow:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Reduce Image Dimensions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your image is 2000 x 2000 pixels or more, it\u2019s worth reducing the dimensions before uploading it to WordPress.
