When so much of your time is spent staring at a device, you start to get preferences for the way content is presented. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More and more, that preference is trending toward a darker interface. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.androidauthority.com\/dark-mode-poll-results-1090716\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2020 Android Authority poll<\/a>, nearly 82% of participants preferred to use dark mode (or night mode), with another 10% claiming they use it part of the time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By offering a dark version of your theme when users have night mode enabled on their browser, you can cater more effectively to a large portion of your audience. In this article, we\u2019ll cover the basics and offer some quick tips you can use to optimize your site for dark mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"#what\">What is dark mode?<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#why\">Why do I need to optimize for dark mode?<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#tips\">Tips for enabling dark mode<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what\"><strong>What is Dark Mode<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dark mode is simply another way users can view content displayed on their phone or computer. <a href=\"https:\/\/nighteye.app\/dark-mode\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Some users prefer it<\/a> (including myself) because they say <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/dev-channel\/let-there-be-darkness-maybe-9facd9c3023d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">it\u2019s easier on their eyes<\/a>, causing less strain. Because it reduces the amount of bright light while maintaining readability, it\u2019s also ideal for nighttime use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many mobile users have also tapped into the knowledge that their device <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/fyi\/google-wants-more-battery-saving-dark-mode-options-in-its-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">battery lasts longer<\/a> when they make the switch to the dark side. Users who find your site and have dark mode enabled will be surprised and delighted that you\u2019ve taken their preferences into account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Making night mode available is especially important for apps, because many have already released dark-mode compatible versions that will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/how-to-enable-dark-mode\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">automatically match the preferences<\/a> in a phone\u2019s OS. If you\u2019re building a larger site and want users to spend lots of time scrolling through content or perusing products, however, the additional settings offered through a paid version may better suit your needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the highest- rated plugins include <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/wp-dark-mode\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WP Dark Mode<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/darklup-lite-wp-dark-mode\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DarklupLite<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/night-mode-and-font-size-kit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Night Mode for WordPress<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Set up Your own Dark Mode Experience<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re spending lots of time in front of a screen, set up a night mode interface for yourself! You can easily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greengeeks.com\/tutorials\/use-dark-mode-wordpress-dashboard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">set your WordPress dashboard to dark mode<\/a>, and most browsers, operating systems, and apps have a dark mode interface. And exposing yourself to dark mode in your own work can help you create a great dark mode experience for your own users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It\u2019s Not 100% Black and White<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Using 100% black paired with 100% white is actually <a href=\"https:\/\/uxdesign.cc\/the-past-present-and-future-of-dark-mode-9254f2956ec7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">harder on the eyes<\/a> and can lead to eye strain. Subdue your color choices a bit to make viewing your content easier. Then, varying shades of gray will help differentiate tiers of content. You can also consider converting the colors of different buttons, links, and headlines to complete your dark theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do Some UX Testing First<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure you\u2019re testing these changes in a staging environment to ensure everything looks great and remains AA compliant before launching your new online or mobile experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where a brand guide comes in handy\u2014use it as your guide to creating a color palette that fits your brand standard while still maintaining clear visuals for all your clickables and call outs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t get Left in the Dark<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t be the last designer left in the dark.
