Understanding how to make those edits, however, will also depend on a few specific elements (such as your website theme).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now that you know what the footer is, as well as why you might want to edit it, let\u2019s take a look at how you can make changes to your website footer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Each theme is unique, but generally, to begin editing your website footer, you\u2019ll open the WordPress Theme Customizer from your Admin dashboard (by selecting Appearance > Themes > Customize).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Once the Customizer is opened, you\u2019ll see different options on the left-hand side of your screen for editing your theme. Look for options pertaining to the \u201cfooter\u201d area (it may be called some variation of \u201cfooter\u201d ). In some themes, this may be through the \u201cWidgets\u201d tab (more on editing the footer with widgets below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n In newer WordPress themes, such as Twenty Twenty-Three<\/a>, which enables Full Site Editing<\/a>, you can simply click into your footer area (after opening the Customizer) and edit it using the same type of block functionality found in the WordPress Block Editor<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Each theme will offer a different approach via the Customizer. Using the Magazine Pro theme<\/a>, for example, you can edit your website footer by clicking through \u201cTheme Settings\u201d to \u201cFooter,\u201d where you can use a variety of Genesis shortcodes <\/a>for adding the elements you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Many themes make it easy to edit the footer via the Customizer, with pre-defined fields for common footer elements such as copyright information or links to the About Us page. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Another way to edit your website footer is with WordPress Widgets. Under \u201cCustomize\u201d in your Admin dashboard, click on \u201cWidgets\u201d to pull up a menu of all the available Widgets on your site. These are typically commonly used elements you can add to your site and should include options for editing your footer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As noted above, other themes will provide different ways to use Widgets for editing the site footer. Navigate to the Appearance > Widgets page in your WordPress admin panel. Next, click the \u201c+\u201c icon to bring up all available blocks, and search for the \u201cNavigation Menu\u201d block. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Once you\u2019ve selected the \u201cNavigation Menu\u201d block, click on the \u201cSelect Menu\u201d dropdown, which should include the new menu you\u2019ve just created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Select your new menu and add a new title (instead of \u201cNavigation Menu\u201d) if you prefer. Drag and drop the Custom HTML Widget to the Widget area you\u2019ve selected. From there, you can open the Custom HTML Widget and paste your HTML code in the content area. Save your changes and preview your site to see how the HTML code displays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Last but not least, you may want to remove the \u201cPowered by WordPress\u201d tagline when editing your website footer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n To remove this text, which is found at the bottom of many WordPress sites, simply click into the Customizer via Appearance > Customize, and find your editable footer area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n From there you should be able to find different options for editing your footer, including a tab titled \u201cCopyright.\u201d Click on this tab and then delete the existing text\u2014you can add your own copy or leave it blank. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Make sure to save your changes, and then preview your site to make sure the edits worked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n If finding the editable footer text proves unwieldy, you can also remove \u201cPowered by WordPress\u201d manually, although the process is a bit more technically involved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n First, make sure you have a backup of your theme’s functions.php file. At WP Engine, we also always recommend that you make any changes to your site using a staging or local development environment (i.e. not in live production). <\/p>\n\n\n\n Once you\u2019ve ensured you have a backup and you\u2019re working in a safe environment, select Appearance > Editor, and find the “functions.php” file from the list of theme files. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Once you find functions.php, add the following code snippet to the end of the file: <\/p>\n\n\n\n This particular code uses a filter to modify text that\u2019s displayed in the WordPress admin footer. By adding an empty string as the new text, “powered by WordPress” will be removed from your site. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Once the code has been added, click \u201cUpdate\u201d to save your changes and you should be good to go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Once you\u2019ve made edits to the footer on your WordPress site, it\u2019s a good idea to perform a site check to make sure everything is working the way you want it to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n This doesn’t need to be a comprehensive site audit, however, you may want to check things like links, design and layout, or site responsiveness.
