To be successful in the world of design, you need to master the art of being efficient and productive. You also need to be adaptable, and while you may not always be in a client-facing role, there\u2019s merit in being proficient in that realm, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though it sounds like a lot, I\u2019ve summarized some of the most underrated qualities of being a successful designer with a long and robust career, and listed some tips on how to achieve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. They Communicate Like a Writer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Designers don\u2019t necessarily have to be wordsmiths, but that doesn\u2019t mean you get a free pass to slack on communication habits. Admittedly, you may think in \u201cpictures\u201d more than you do in words, which means that effective communication is even more important if you&#8217;re going to accurately convey what you\u2019re thinking. Even though it may require more effort, buttoning up your communication habits will take you further with internal colleagues, supervisors, and clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/getflywheel-images.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2016\/10\/habits-of-successful-designers-typing.jpg\" alt=\"woman wearing bracelets types on a laptop, her tablet and phone are also near her on the desk\" class=\"wp-image-19451\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If your communication skills need a little work, here are a few easy ways to start improving them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make sure your emails are written in complete sentences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If that\u2019s not working super well, have a copywriter proof your emails.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are having trouble writing your idea down, suggest a phone call or webinar to talk through it instead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure that any and all creative briefs contain the entire project scope and all of the client\u2019s expectations. They Have a Buttoned-Up Way to Manage Their Workflow<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you\u2019re working on a single project or juggling several for different clients, you\u2019ve got to stay organized and apply the same high-level standards to each incoming task. This ensures that your clients remain happy and you stay afloat as more job requests come in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/getflywheel-images.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2016\/10\/habits-of-successful-designers-organization.jpg\" alt=\"hand writes in a notebook\" class=\"wp-image-19453\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you wondering if you have a stable system for handling your workflow? They are Nimble<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re a designer (<a href=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/resources\/design-for-a-niche\/\">if you haven\u2019t defined a niche<\/a>), you need to be able to go from working on a food and beverage client to working on an insurance client all within a matter of hours. You also need to meet tight deadlines and quick turnarounds. If you\u2019re unable to keep up with fast-changing demands, your success as a designer is in jeopardy. To prepare yourself for these kinds of quick-turn tasks, be sure to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take time out of each day to learn about a new design trend.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify skills you don\u2019t have or need to work on and add them to a \u201cbetterment\u201d plan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you work in an agency, volunteer to be on teams that support different clients from the ones you work on daily. If you\u2019re a freelancer, try to team up with another designer on something that\u2019s a little out of your wheelhouse. This will help you grow your abilities, improve your portfolio, and expand your reach.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When in doubt, a positive mental attitude will do a long way with being a successful designer (as does a healthy dose of humility).
