Be Prepared to Give a Pitch at any Given Moment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While true networking events are obviously great for booking new business, it\u2019s important to remember that you can actually find clients <em>anywhere<\/em>. <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webshopmasters.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WebshopMasters<\/a> (an agency in the Netherlands) once found a new client during a concert, and <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/d3corp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">D3<\/a> (an agency from Maryland) once found a client by talking about Facebook ads while getting a pedicure!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/inquemedia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inque Media<\/a> made a similar connection at the perfect time. \u201cWe&#8217;ve gained a new client by starting a conversation with someone in a restaurant. Turns out, it was the owner and he owned two other neighboring businesses!\u201d \u2014Natalie<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/getflywheel.com\/layout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/inque-flatlay1.png\" alt=\"screenshot from Inque website\" class=\"wp-image-36895\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"http:\/\/inquemedia.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Inque Media (opens in a new tab)\">Inque Media<\/a> is a full-service digital marketing company in Plymouth, MI.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And even if the timing isn\u2019t perfect, having your pitch ready can still come in handy, like this scenario from <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.relyon.agency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RelyOn<\/a>: \u201cI got into a car accident and while waiting for the police and tow truck, we got to talking about what we do. A few coffees later, we signed a new client.\u201d \u2014Thomas Berry<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why it\u2019s critical to always have your elevator pitch ready at a moment\u2019s notice. If you wait for a formal event, you might be missing out on clients that are all around you every day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Embrace Snail Mail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These days everything is digital, which can actually make physical ads really special! Some agencies are embracing the idea of handwritten or physical goods, as ways to get potential clients\u2019 attention.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/one18media.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">ONE18MEDIA<\/a>, an agency from New York, is all about this approach. Don\u2019t just send out a letter from the store; treat it like a portfolio piece that perfectly encompasses your brand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Make New Friends<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Connecting with other people, even if it\u2019s not directly for work, can actually have a positive impact on your business! By meeting new people, not only are you expanding your circle of contacts, but you never know when your friends might come to you for your services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/thedigitalelevator.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Digital Elevator\u2019s<\/a> owner met a client based on a shared interest: surfing. \u201cWe found one of our most successful, long-term clients randomly when our owner was chatting with someone about surfing. Rucking is hiking with a weighted backpack. It\u2019s very social. We talk as we hike. Along with great friendships, I have made some business connections as well.\u201d \u2014Carla Baldwin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re burnt out looking for new clients, maybe shift your approach to just making a new friend. You never know when they could be one in the same!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. This may simply be a situation where you tell them they\u2019re better off using another agency or platform. They refer your business, because you&#8217;re being honest and you care. We love to talk to people and hear their story and journey.\u201d<\/em> \u2014Chuck Austin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By focusing on your niche and referring clients who aren\u2019t the right fit to a different firm, you\u2019re giving the client a better experience and helping another agency. In turn, they\u2019ll be more likely to do the same and refer clients that would be a better fit for your services. Everybody wins!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Speak at Events<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at events as a representative for your agency has a few perks. Do some research into what upcoming events make sense for your industry and your clients\u2019 agency, and get on the speaking list!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Be Nice to People<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes the best client relationships begin with being nice to a random stranger. Don\u2019t be afraid to talk about what you do because you never know who might need your services. \u201cWe met a guy on the beach and challenged him to a game of spike ball. He ended up becoming a client.\u201d \u2014Scott Bishop<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be nice to people, be open about your passion for your work, and good things will follow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Sponsor Events<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Award shows are huge opportunities for agencies. It\u2019s a place where you can show off&nbsp;all your amazing work and celebrate the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a natural part of agency life and some agencies, like <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/starletti.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Starletti<\/a>, are finding clients by sponsoring these events. \u201cWe&#8217;re a partner of a big business award show. This way we meet a lot of new businesses and find new clients.\u201d \u2014Harry<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider sponsoring an event that\u2019s important to your clients. In doing this, you\u2019re helping fund the production of the event and giving your brand some exposure to the people you want to reach. Be authentic and intentional in choosing which events to sponsor and how those events align with your agency\u2019s values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Be Active in Online Communities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Staying active in online communities is important for agencies. It shows your brand is engaged with the community and is truly there to provide advice, tips, and feedback.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/elod.in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elodin Design<\/a> has taken advantage of public Facebook groups online and has gotten many new projects by simply answering an advanced WordPress question in a Facebook group. They offer free website support in Facebook Groups, a valuable service for members.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However you choose to be active in online communities, always remember to reflect your agency\u2019s values and offer services and advice in the best way. Maybe the person you\u2019re helping just needed an answer at that moment, but you never know when they\u2019ll need your full services down the road.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Make the Most of Your Social Profiles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s no secret that the more cohesive and complete your social profile is, the better experience it is for those wanting more information about your agency. Many clients are looking at Instagram profiles, Google reviews, and even Facebook profiles when considering hiring your agency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/hayesweb.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hayes Web &amp; Digital<\/a> found a lead, or rather a lead found them, through Facebook messenger. \u201cWe received a lead from our Facebook page instant messaging. Advertise on Social Platforms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on your role at your agency, you may not pay too much attention to Facebook\u2019s earning reports. However, if you did, you would know that Facebook makes most of its revenue from advertising, which means you have more competition than ever with your ad placement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/starlingdigital.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Starling Digital<\/a> in Nashville advertised something unique and included the one buzzword that everyone loves: free. \u201cWe advertised a free 15-minute consultation on Facebook which had a link to our Calendly schedule that would allow prospects to select a time.\u201d \u2014Andrew<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Create ads that not only catch your target audience\u2019s eye, but stands out as different and unique for any pair of eyes. Embrace the unique and different ideas for Facebook ads!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">11. Embrace Word-of-Mouth Referrals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Word-of-mouth falls into the \u201ctraditional\u201d category of finding new clients, but agencies are embracing this tactic in new ways. They\u2019re finding that many word-of-mouth referrals are coming from people that have only had one interaction or completed one project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.limeglowdesign.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LimeGlow<\/a>, based in Milwaukee, WI received an inquiry from someone looking to purchase their branding services as a unique gift for their friend who was launching an estate planning firm. That friend ended up becoming a referral machine. \u201cWe&#8217;ve now provided multiple services, including website development. Help Local Nonprofits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Giving back to the local community should be a part of your marketing strategy. Especially in 2019, more and more people care about humanitarian efforts and giving back. Offer Consulting Services Before Web Design Services<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Show, don\u2019t tell. What does this mean? In short terms, it refers to showing a potential client the value of your agency and its services rather than telling them your value. Many business owners know exactly what work they want, but there\u2019s a disconnect about where to look for those professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/lecreati.digital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lecreati<\/a> finds all of their clients from job boards, specifically Upwork. \u201cThe most simple way is to just go to Upwork, where they [business owners] can see the review where you can\u2019t fake portfolios.\u201d \u2014Tanya<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/getflywheel.com\/layout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/lecreati-1.png\" alt=\"Lecreati logo\" class=\"wp-image-37005\" width=\"361\" height=\"361\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Lecreati (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/lecreati.digital\" target=\"_blank\">Lecreati<\/a> designs and develops WordPress websites to create awesome experiences and drive more conversions for consulting or service-based businesses.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">15. Create Quality Content<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Content (like blog posts, magazines, and email newsletters) is how some agencies are nurturing clients to become a client. Quality content starts that initial conversation for most clients because they can read a piece of content and know within a few sentences if they\u2019d want to partner with you or not. For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canny-creative.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Canny Creative<\/a> in England, a majority of their clients come from content.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201c99% of our clients come from either our blog posts or referrals. Lately, we were being interviewed for a business publication. We simply asked who was heading up the design, and found out they were yet to select an agency, so we stormed in and won the work.\u201d<\/em> \u2014Tony Hardy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wierstewart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wier \/ Stewart<\/a> is taking additional measures to go above and beyond in the content they create. \u201cWe&#8217;ve had some self-promo campaigns that won awards and caught the attention of clients we wouldn&#8217;t normally have had the opportunity to meet. One of these was a free alt-weekly style newspaper that we self-published and featured all of our existing clients as advertisers in.\u201d \u2014Wes Childers&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wier \/ Stewart even started creating their own weekly email featuring a case study! \u201cFor over a year we have published a weekly \u2018New Work Wednesday\u2019 email featuring a mini case-study of a project we have recently completed. We have seen this consistent communication with our existing client base be shared beyond our current list.\u201d \u2014Wes Childers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">16. Host a Unique Event<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hosting an event is typically on the list of marketing tactics for agencies (and if it isn\u2019t, you can add it now!). Take it a step further and think about unique events that can bring potential clients to your front door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/idea-kraft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Idea Kraft<\/a> hosts \u201ca bi-annual rebrand event called Re-Kraft where we volunteer our time and dig in for 48 hours to rebrand a startup, non-profit, or small business in need of a new identity, for free. This allows us to get our name out there, while also using our marketing budget to help the community.\u201d \u2013Alaina Gardner<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/getflywheel.com\/layout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Idea-Kraft-logo_high-res-784x783.jpg\" alt=\"Idea Kraft logo\" class=\"wp-image-36906\" width=\"283\" height=\"283\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Idea Kraft (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/idea-kraft.com\" target=\"_blank\">Idea Kraft<\/a> is a full-service creative studio that specializes in branding, digital marketing, packaging, and website design.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Think it\u2019s too late to host a unique event? Nonsense! These events don\u2019t need to be fancy or cost thousands of dollars. Bring the whole team in on event ideas that could be good for the community and good for your agency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">17. Lean into Cold Calls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cold calls aren\u2019t getting the cold shoulder like most people think. Agencies are getting creative about how they cold call and are doing their research beforehand to make sure the people they are calling are the right clients.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.onlinesidekicks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Onlinesidekicks<\/a> repeatedly succeeds with cold calls. They \u201csearch for businesses who are left behind in the 90\u2019s and bring them up to speed in 2019. Example: Flash sites.\u201d \u2014Alejandro Brzovic<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Down on your leads this month? Give cold calling a try!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">18. Guerilla Marketing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Guerilla marketing is tried and true, and opens the door for creative ideas. Use graffiti marketing if you\u2019re based in a bigger city (where it\u2019s legal, of course!), put your logo on a place your clients tend to hang out at, etc. Prandible, based in Germany, has had clients find them from \u201ca branded sticker on a traffic light.\u201d \u2014Paul<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/getflywheel.com\/layout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/prandible-784x980.png\" alt=\"Man holds sign displaying Prandible logo\" class=\"wp-image-36907\" width=\"360\" height=\"450\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Prandible is an education-focused agency that trains the owner and teams about digital retail, marketing, etc.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/impactworks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ImpactWorks<\/a> in North Carolina used the spirit of the season to land some new clients. \u201cWon a Halloween costume contest dressed as a marketing email.
