It skips over the process of dialing to immediately put potential customers in touch with someone who represents your brand. Click-to-call\u2019s ease of use makes it a desirable feature for mobile users.<\/p>\n<p>With nearly half of the world\u2019s internet searches <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/306528\/share-of-mobile-internet-traffic-in-global-regions\/\">coming from mobile sites<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/adwords.googleblog.com\/2013\/09\/new-research-shows-that-70-of-mobile.html\">70 percent of mobile searchers<\/a> using click-to-call, it\u2019s a valuable selling point for mobile sites. For eCommerce sites in particular, having a click-to-call feature has been shown to increase sales. Plus, potential customers are more likely to check out your brand if it has click-to-call.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Add Click-to-Call (2 Steps)<\/h2>\n<p>While there is <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/call-now-button\/\">a plugin<\/a> to add click-to-call functionality on a mobile site with a responsive theme, this won\u2019t work with unresponsive ones. Thankfully, you can manually make your phone number clickable, so you don\u2019t have to change your theme. Here\u2019s how to do it.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Edit Your Page in WordPress<\/h3>\n<p>First, you\u2019ll want to edit the page where you want to add your click-to-call link, such as your Contact, About, or home page. Using hyphens to break the number into segments improves readability and makes it easier for phones to automatically detect phone numbers.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 2: Add a Hyperlink to Your Text<\/h3>\n<p>Next, you\u2019ll want to highlight the specific click-to-call text, and turn it into a hyperlink from the editing toolbar. On desktop sites, this link will start a video chat using FaceTime or Skype.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Track Click-to-Call (3 Steps)<\/h2>\n<p>Now you\u2019ve added click-to-call functionality to your site, you can track your link\u2019s clicks as an event in Google Analytics. This gives you an insight into your users\u2019 preferences and habits. This metric won\u2019t include other phone calls though, since Google Analytics only tracks how often the link is clicked.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Determine Your Event Fields<\/h3>\n<p>To track an event in Google Analytics, you\u2019ll have to add a <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/analytics\/devguides\/collection\/analyticsjs\/events\">line of code<\/a> to the click-to-call link we created earlier:<\/p>\n<pre>ga(\u2018send\u2019, \u2018event\u2019, [eventCategory], [eventAction], [eventLabel], [eventValue], [fieldsObject])<\/pre>\n<p><em>eventCategory<\/em>, <em>eventAction<\/em>, <em>eventLabel<\/em>, <em>eventValue<\/em>, and <em>fieldObjects<\/em> are \u2018fields\u2019, and how you populate them will determine how results are presented in Google Analytics. You will have to fill at least the <em>eventCategory<\/em> and <em>eventAction<\/em> fields in order for the code to work. We\u2019ll use \u201cPhone Call Tracking\u201d as the <em>eventCategory<\/em> and \u201cclick-to-call\u201d as the <em>eventAction<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re tracking multiple click-to-call numbers, you can also add <em>eventLabels<\/em> to distinguish them from one another. Making the <em>eventLabel<\/em> the phone number itself helps to easily differentiate it from others.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 2: Add the Code to Your Site<\/h3>\n<p>When you add the code to your site, you\u2019ll have to include an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3schools.com\/js\/js_events.asp\">\u2019event handler\u2019<\/a>. In this case, we\u2019ll use onclick, since we\u2019re tracking the number of times our click-to-call link is selected. All together, our event tracking code now looks like this:<\/p>\n<pre>onclick=\u201cga(\u2018send\u2019, \u2018event\u2019, \u2018Phone Call Tracking\u2019, \u2018click-to-call\u2019, \u2018+1 234-567-8900\u2019);\u201d<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-72346\" src=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/click-to-call-4.png\" alt=\"button click to call\" width=\"512\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/click-to-call-4.png 512w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/click-to-call-4-300x216.png 300w, https:\/\/wpengine.com\/case-studies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/click-to-call-4-200x144.png 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Toggling over to the Text editor (or right-clicking and selecting <em>Edit<\/em> as <em>HTML<\/em> in the Block Editor), we\u2019ll add the code to our click-to-call link within the hyperlink tag. The link should now be set up to track whenever a visitor clicks to call the number listed on your site.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 3: Test Your Click-to-Call Tracking<\/h3>\n<p>You can test your event tracking out by logging into Google Analytics, then opening the page with your click-to-call link on your mobile device or in a separate tab. An overview of all your events is also available in <em>Behavior<\/em> &gt; <em>Events<\/em> &gt; <em>Overview<\/em>. In the real-time events bar graph, you can see exactly how many times your click-to-call link has been hit. This data is handy when analyzing how your users prefer to communicate, or how engaged they are on your site.<\/p>\n<h2>Continue the Customer Experience Offline<\/h2>\n<p>Click-to-call links make it so that users can contact you at practically any time, so you should consider listing your hours on your site and setting up a voicemail box for the number.
