On the WP Engine platform you may create unlimited Transferable sites, with environments that are locked by password protection as you develop and create websites. These environments may be transferred to other customers, making them ideal for developers and agencies to hand off their work to their clients. However, if you wish to keep the Transferable site and environments on your own account, you may want to “unlock” the site when it’s time to go live with the website. In this guide we will explain how to unlock your Transferable sites.
Step 1: Login to your User Portal
Start by logging in to the WP Engine User Portal with your login credentials. Upon logging in, select the Sites page from the top navigation. Here you will see a list of the sites on your account. Transferable sites will be denoted by an orange arrow icon next to the site name and all environments underneath.
Step 2: Unlock the site
To unlock a Transferable site, select the ellipsis menu (…) on the right side of the site. You will see the option to “Unlock site” in the menu.
Click the “Unlock site” option, then confirm you wish to unlock the site and all environments within it. Remember that unlocking a site is a permanent action! Once a Transferable site has been unlocked, it cannot become Transferable again. Instead, you may copy an unlocked environment to a new transferable one if needed.
Tip: If you wish to transfer one of the environments in your site and keep the others, transfer the individual environment first from its Overview page. After transferring the environment(s) you wish, then you may unlock the site and remaining environments using the steps in this article.
After unlocking the site you will see a green banner indicating the action was successful.
The environments within the site will be unlocked shortly after you unlock the site itself. You will be able to tell when this change occurs by the lack of the orange “transferable” arrow next to those environments.
If you experience any errors or issues in the process to unlock your site, please contact WP Engine Support for more help. Support is available to help via Live Chat 24/7 in your User Portal.
