Organizing installs with Workspace groups gives you a flexible way to manage and group your WordPress installs in the WP Engine User Portal.
Workspaces are groups of WP Engine installs. Installs can only be assigned to one Workspace at a time, but you can create as many Workspaces as you need.
Workspaces help you organize your User Portal dashboard in a way that makes sense for your business—by client, project, web property, type of site, or some other characteristic. Using Workspaces will help keep you and your team sane as you grow your business and manage more and more websites with WP Engine.
There are infinite ways you can use Workspace groups to organize your installs and help your team better understand how you use WP Engine. Here are a few example use cases:
Group by Project
Sometimes projects involve different web properties: one install for a blog, another for a marketing microsite, and another for an internal company wiki. Leverage Workspace groups to keep your WP Engine User Portal dashboard easy to understand, and keep track of all the web properties for a specific project.
Group by Web Property
Multi-environment development is more popular than ever. Leveraging multiple installs to create Production, Staging, and Development installs is a great way to create a complex workflow. Workspace groups can help you keep track of these installs and group them together.
Group by Client or Department
Have a client or a department with more websites than you can keep track of? Workspace groups can help you keep track of all of those sites and make it easier to quickly check in on a set of sites when it’s time to review your client’s account.
Creating a Workspace Group
- To create a Workspace, visit the install overview page for the install you’d like to assign to a Workspace group. You’ll see a new label in the “Install stats” box for Workspaces:
- Click “Add to Workspace,” which will take you to a page to manage your Workspaces.
- Click the blue “Add Workspace” button in the top right corner.
- Define your Workspace details on the the Workspace creation page:
Once you’ve created a few Workspace groups, you can quickly choose Workspaces when you create and copy more installs using the “Add Install” and “Copy Install” tools.
Creating Workspace Notes
Adding a note to a Workspace is a great way to add additional details about your installs to help keep your team on the same page. Workspace notes can be viewed by simply hovering over the title and note icon in the heading of a Workspace group. You can edit your Workspace note by clicking the “Edit Workspace” link in the Workspace note details. You can put just about anything into a Workspace note:
- Details about your deployment process
- Links to your internal project tracking system
- Informational details about a client or project
Workspace notes make it easy for new team members to quickly onboard and learn how you use WP Engine and keep your entire team on the same page.
