They can’t, by themselves, know the details of your latest product launch or the content of your most recent company update.

Smart Search AI MCP is an advanced API layer that solves the stale data problem directly. It uses MCP, a universal language that allows external AI agents to communicate with your website’s most current information.

As Senior Product Manager Luke Patterson notes, Smart Search AI MCP eliminates one of the most painful limitations developers have faced in this area. “The biggest hurdle for developers building custom AI tools is outdated data. Large language models are powerful, but they are limited by the static information they were trained on, or what they’re able to scrape from the web” he says. “The Smart Search AI MCP server solves this directly. It acts as an intelligent bridge, allowing AI agents like ChatGPT or Claude to query your site’s live, in-real-time accurate content via our Semantic Search and Vector Database. How Smart Search AI MCP works

Smart Search AI MCP is a special component that runs as part of WP Engine’s existing Smart Search service. When enabled (it is disabled by default and requires user opt-in for security), it exposes your site’s content as callable “tools” for any connected LLM.

The process is fast and precise:

1. The Query: A user interacts with an external AI application—perhaps a custom customer support chatbot built using a model like Claude.
2. The Tool Check: The AI model recognizes it needs current, specialized information. It then recognizes it has access to a new “tool” via the MCP, which is your website’s search function.
3. The Real-Time Search: The AI model sends a standardized search or fetch request to your unique MCP server address.
4. The Response: The MCP server receives the request, uses the speed and accuracy of our integrated Semantic Search and Vector Database to find the absolute most relevant and recent content on your site, and sends that fresh data back to the LLM.
5. The Accurate Answer: The LLM uses this real-time, accurate content to formulate a relevant, up-to-date answer for the user.
