Upstatement utilized WP Engine to create Mozilla Builders: a digital home that amplifies the work of the humans building open-source AI projects. To their community, Mozilla continues to be a signal of hope, proving through action that a responsible, human-driven AI future is worth fighting for.

The challenge

Mozilla is a longtime champion of open-source values, with a family of products including the popular Firefox browser. Its mission is to advocate for, research, build, and fund projects that keep the internet safe and free. But when its team approached Upstatement, they had yet to establish themselves in the AI landscape.

Mozilla’s goal was to foster an alliance of people, communities, and companies who can push the trajectory of AI in a direction that’s good for humanity. With an ambitious six-week timeline, Upstatement was tasked with building a premium experience that positions Mozilla at the center of the open-source AI renaissance and amplifies its impact beyond Discord servers and GitHub repos.

The solution

The Mozilla Builders program consists of developers inside and outside of Mozilla working to bring open, privacy-focused AI into the mainstream by building and investing in tools that will help shape an AI future that users can trust. Upstatement built them a digital home to share their stories.

With a short build timeline and zero margin for error, the agency needed reliable technology to support cutting-edge content. They chose WordPress and WP Engine for the foundational elements of CMS and hosting, with Timber for templating and Tailwind for styles. Editors were able to start sharing stories quickly, safe in the knowledge that no amount of traffic would overwhelm the site.

The results

Mozilla Builders was unanimously embraced by the Mozilla community and the broader open-source AI world. The new site was nominated for a Webby Award for Best Website in Corporate Responsibility, acting as both a user-generated content hub and a way for Mozilla to connect with innovators at the cutting edge of AI research and development.

Mozilla Builders is already supporting a number of initiatives, including a tool that converts PDFs into Markdown while running locally and an LLM designed to support AI capabilities in Swahili-speaking regions, among others. With this new site, Mozilla and its Builders initiative will continue to be a signal of hope, proving through action that a human-centered approach to AI is possible.
