Our Customer

NRC is one of the Netherlands' most influential news organizations, recognized for its high-quality journalism and in-depth reporting.

The publication was formed through the merger of two major Dutch newspapers in 1970, building on a publishing history spanning almost two centuries. NRC was also an early digital pioneer, becoming the first Dutch daily newspaper to launch an online edition in 1995.

As the organization continued to evolve, NRC adopted WordPress as its content management system to provide the flexibility and scalability required by a modern enterprise newsroom. To further strengthen its editorial operations, the publisher looked to enhance the publishing experience inside WordPress with workflow capabilities designed specifically for enterprise news organizations.

The Challenge

As NRC's editorial operation evolved, the newsroom needed more structured workflows to support content creation, editorial reviews, and publication within WordPress.

The publisher wanted to improve collaboration, maintain consistent editorial standards, reduce manual effort, and give journalists and editors better tools for managing content throughout its lifecycle. At the same time, any solution needed to remain flexible enough to accommodate NRC's unique editorial processes and continue evolving alongside the newsroom.

The Solution

NRC implemented WP Engine Newsroom to strengthen editorial workflows inside WordPress without introducing unnecessary complexity.

The platform introduced configurable publication checklists, advanced revision tracking, centralized media management, custom metadata fields, deferred publishing updates, intelligent internal linking, and contextual editorial review tools—all designed specifically for enterprise publishing teams.

To align with NRC's editorial standards, several capabilities have been configured around the newsroom's existing processes. Publication checklists reflect the organization's publishing requirements, revision tracking supports custom WordPress blocks, metadata and extension points accommodate NRC's editorial workflows, and API integrations enhance internal linking recommendations.

Additional editorial collaboration capabilities, including block-level comments and soft-delete functionality, enable editors to provide contextual feedback directly within draft articles while preserving a complete editorial history inside the CMS.

The Results

By adopting publisher-specific workflow capabilities inside WordPress, NRC has created a more efficient editorial environment for creating, reviewing, and publishing the quality content its readers have come to expect.

Editors have gained structured workflows that reduce manual effort, improve collaboration, and help maintain consistent publishing standards across the newsroom.

Stronger editorial governance

Configurable publication checklists embed NRC's editorial standards directly into the publishing workflow, making essential quality checks easier to apply before publication.

Advanced revision tracking, custom metadata management, and deferred publishing updates give editors greater control over content throughout its lifecycle while supporting the publisher's unique editorial requirements.

Better collaboration

Block-level comments enable editors to leave contextual feedback directly within draft articles, making reviews more precise and reducing reliance on external communication tools.

Soft-delete functionality preserves editorial history by allowing content to be removed from published articles while remaining visible within the CMS alongside its associated editorial feedback.

Greater editorial efficiency

Purpose-built workflow capabilities simplify day-to-day publishing by bringing editorial tools into a single WordPress experience.

Features such as intelligent internal linking, centralized media management, configurable metadata, and editorial review workflows reduce manual effort and help teams work more consistently throughout the publishing process.

Built for long-term evolution

Rather than relying on a collection of bespoke editorial tools, NRC has adopted an extensible platform that could evolve alongside both WordPress and the newsroom's changing requirements.

As WP Engine Newsroom continues to develop, NRC benefits from ongoing improvements and new capabilities while avoiding the maintenance overhead associated with fully custom-built editorial solutions.
