RocketLevel, a marketing automation and lead engagement platform, had full-time developers spending most of their time on manual plugin maintenance across sizable multisite installs.
-
The ChallengePlugin maintenance was eating developer time
Updating a single plugin across 20 to 30 different multisites had become a real chore, with full-time developers spending the majority of their time on plugin maintenance instead of core projects. RocketLevel needed a solution to reduce hours spent on plugin maintenance, enabling developers to refocus on core business projects.
-
The SolutionAutomated updates, with a safety net
RocketLevel reduced the time developers spend on plugin updates to near zero by activating Smart Plugin Manager (SPM) on its most heavily trafficked multisite installs. The solution automatically performs plugin updates at a scheduled, customizable interval and uses machine learning to determine whether updates pass or fail. Since launch, two full-time developers have been able to move into R&D roles, with time freed up from SPM.
When you’re dealing with sizable installs and 20-30 different multisites, updating a single plugin, not to mention multiple plugins, can become a real chore. What I like about Smart Plugin Manager is that it’s not overly complex. It gets to the core of what it needs to do and it does it well.
